ORANGE!

We agreed with Ambra and Jen to work on orange color. Check out their experiments, they're just great!

Here is my first experiment. I decided to try a new recipe that I plan to use for a shampoo bar. The soap traced fast, but it didn't seize so I had plenty of time to add the clays and betacarotene little by little to get the color right.

Recipe:

35% Castor oil
25% Mango butter
20% Avocado oil
15% Coconut oil
5% Jojoba wax (solid flakes)

Beta-carotene paste
1 tsp Pink Argiletz clay
1 tsp Red Argiletz clay

8% superfat

I diluted the clays in a small amount of avocado oil to ensure that it would disperse evenly into the soap batter.

At trace I added a couple of drops of betacarotene into the entire batch. Then I poured half of it into a mold. In the other half I wanted to see the difference of using Pink or Red Argiletz clay. So, I added the Pink Argiletz clay and poured most ot the soap into a mold. Into the remainings, I added the Red Argiletz clay.

In the picture the small yellow bar of soap is the one with only betacarotene. The upper part of the bigger bar is the one with pink clay and the bottom stripe is the one with the red clay added also.

  1. So Betacarotene produced that beautiful yello?? And the pink clay produced orange? and Red clay a darker orange? Not sure if the photos came through with their true colours, but you got a nice orange! I have used pink clay in the past and got pink. I really love this yellow! I have had trouble with yellow holding in the past. I got a beautiful yellow from Orange Tissue Oil, but within 1 month it faded. Let me know if the colour in the betacarotene soap fades or stays! Nice work! xo Jen

  2. Thanks Jen! Yes, the bright yellow is from betacarotene. Orange from betacarotene + pink clay. Darker orange from betacarotene + pink clay + red clay. I was really surprised to get that bright yellow. I hope it doesn't fade. I'll let you know!

  3. That look really nice! How clever to mix the clay in with the betacarotene. I'll have to start to mix and see what that produces. Do you get the clay locally or do you order it on the internet? I'm on my way to Helsinki tomorrow morning so I always wonder if I can find supplies when I'm traveling. Although i don't have much time, unfortunately.

  4. I love betacarotene! But unfortunately mine doesn't last very long, the color fades in about 2 to 3 months... I'll give your cleaver method a try, mixing it with clay!

  5. Ambra: I order the clay on the internet. Unfortunately in Finland the soap supplies shops operate only online. But the next time you come to Helsinki send me a note! I live only 30 min from the city center and it would be so nice to meet in person!

Between Friends: I'll let you know in a couple of months if mine faded or not.
